January 27 Practice/Reminders

Hey, I did not forget to put up this week's practice! However, I was too lazy to splice... there was just so much starting/stopping, I just thought it would be ok to just leave it as is, so here y'are:

January 27 Practice

Also, a few reminders. We're not playing this week (Connect Groups), but we are practicing this Tuesday for SNL, as well as sometime Saturday, if I'm not mistaken (feel free to correct me), and a bit on the actual Sunday as well. Just start going back over your parts, listen to the recordings and see what you liked about what you played, and what you may want to change. See y'all... Sunday?

EDIT: There is supposed to be a snow storm starting Tuesday night... at least from what I've heard, and if this is the case, we're hard pressed. We'll see what we can do.

Song Of The Week - January 30

Welcome back for another SOTW! Sorry that this place is looking a little dry right now, if I could buy time, I'd get some to update round here a little bit :P . We'll see what we get in the coming days.

This week's SOTW is a little hard for me to... interpret. It has a good message, at least I think, but I don't have a firm reasoning of the song's message yet, so you guys will have to tell me what you think!

Save You - Matthew Perryman Jones, Swallow The Sea

"So/Help me decide/Help me to make up/Make up my mind/wouldn't that save you..."

This song and I have been on acquaintance terms since 2007 :P. I heard it once on a TV show, and it just flowed so well with it. More than that, it was an amazing song standalone. The funny thing is, the album wasn't released until August of 2008, so it must've been a long single haha!

Looking for some music on CDL, I found the artist again, and realized it was a Christian song, which surprised me. Although it does happen more nowadays, you don't see many Christian songs being played on TV, and I found it great that this one was able to make it on. The song has a very laid back feel, and the simple acoustic and piano make it an awesome song to listen to.

The song, or as much as I can figure out of it, is talking about indecision and the past of the speaker. The part that gets me the most is the chorus though... Help me decide... to save you? It's a question mark, a mystery I can't quite unravel.

Unfortunately, I do not have much to say on this song, perhaps for the fact that it does not present overtly Christian lyrics. But I believe there is a message that I am missing, and I would love it if you guys could help me find it! I wanted to share this song with you guys because I feel that it does have some message, and I hope that someone could enlighten me on it. So this SOTW is unique. It is my first question mark, a song I don't have a completely unobscured view on. Perhaps that's the way the author wanted it. Perhaps I'm overlooking something important. What do you think?

Song Of The Week - January 23

Hey guys, hope you guys are having an awesome week! The files from Senior High worship should be up fairly soon, just need to get them uploaded.

This week, we have another SOTW :P. It's quickly becoming my favorite part of the week, because it's a chance to show some sweet music that may otherwise go unnoticed. Let's roll it on out!

More Than Ashes - The Merchant Band, Let The Weak Speak

"I'm more/Than what these ashes say/They will fade away/When he comes for me"

This week's SOTW goes to a very good unknown group. The Merchant Band is a worship group whose songs are fresh, creative, and heartfelt. The album actually released just this past September, so they are a pretty new group in my music library. However, they are a very welcome addition to the catalogue I have.

More Than Ashes begins with a nice resonant guitar, followed by the soft spoken voice of the singer, uttering words of encouragement and truth. The message is not difficult to understand, which perhaps makes it so good. To me, the song is trying to convey that we're more than ashes, more than what others say, and more importantly, more than just the simplicity of our flesh. Ashes typically are undesirable, the remnants of something long gone and forgotten. But God sees us as more than that, more than just the dust we came from and the dust we'll return to. He sees us as something precious, something to keep. We are His roses, His to keep.

The song then rises with a swelling crescendo, followed by the overdriven guitars and the singer's reminder, now forceful and triumphant.

"I'm more/Than what these ashes say"

More Than Ashes is my pick for SOTW this week. The emotion behind this song, and the simple yet powerful lyrics go a long way in making the piece something special. Hope you guys like it, it's an amazing song for any type of worship or silent praise.

Doodle In A (Breaking From The Norm)

Today, I was just playing around on the piano, and was just doing things the way I normally do them. But a few minutes in, I remembered some Ian had said previously... that this year, we should try and let our "creative juices" flow more. I realized that there can't be any improvement on a musician's part if they walk along the same path. The same goes for anything in life, as a matter of fact. If you're spending your time being comfortable, you're not spending your time stretching yourself, whether it be musically, physically, spiritually... To be comfortable is to be... something not good :P, at least I think so. So, the song may just be a doodle, but it's my beginning to trying to stretch myself more in what I try to do. Cheers.

Song Of The Week - January 16

Man it's cold outside! I hope you guys are are warm somewhere on this freezing Friday! Well it's that time again, where we commend a song for being awesome in its own awesome way :P. It's time for Song Of The Week, and we're going back a couple years with this one...

Daylight - Brave Saint Saturn, The Light Of Things Hoped For

"Aching for a spark/Trembling in pitches dark/Daylight/Save me"

The Light Of Things Hoped For was released all the way back in 2003. The album is in itself, a story, highlighting the voyage of the U.S.S. Gloria, and each of the tracks chronologically followed the adventures of the spaceship as it traveled around the moon. Basically, the U.S.S Gloria had lost contact with Earth when it was caught in a lunar eclipse, and all hope was lost for their survival. I really don't know how I can explain this song and give it the praise it deserves. Honestly, it's that good.

Brave Saint Saturn crafted this song perfectly, and added some amazing symbolism to it. When the U.S.S Gloria lost contact with Earth on the dark side of the moon, to me it represents how evil can envelope you in a veil of darkness. There may have been some situations where you were confronted with a problem, and it feels like you're drifting farther and farther from the light at the end of the tunnel.

"Jesus Christ/Light of the world/You never did forget me"

The U.S.S. Gloria is finally able to reestablish contact with Earth, and then they come out of the eclipse, finally seeing the sunlight. Jesus is that daylight. He lights the world, and removes darkness from his sight. The writer is calling upon Him to save him, just as we do when evil comes, like a thief in the night...

I really can't describe the way this song makes me feel. It is just a powerful cry out to God in a time of desperate need, and the symbolism used to convey that was excellent. It just pulls at your emotions, the intensity of the singer, and the longing for God he displays in this song. The ending is... amazing. The singer literally screams his lungs out, crying for home, for Jesus. Every single time I hear it, it sends a chill down my spine. Daylight is January 9th's Song Of The Week, and frankly, it's well deserved.

When The Going Gets Tough...

Hey all, sorry for not writing a lot these past few days, it's just that January is exceptionally busy right now, so unfortunately, there won't be much here until after exams are done. I will still be doing Song Of The Week, but I just need some time to focus on my last batch of winter exams... Cheers.

yes, I'll be back at 9... on a day that's yet to be determined.

Song Of The Week - January 9

Hey all, I hope that you've been well this week, wherever you are at the moment. We're all just starting to get back into the regular routine of things after the Christmas holidays, so I hope that it's not too hard for anyone to get back in the swing of things.

Like several Fridays before this, and several Fridays to come, another Song Of The Week is rolling by. I must admit, I had a hard time picking this one out. I wanted something meaningful and heartwarming to take the SOTW this week, but also, to break away from the minor tones of previous weeks. So in light of this, I went searching, and think I found what I was looking for.

Rescue - Seabird, 'Til We See The Shore

"The earth moves and you find me/Alive but unworthy/broken and empty/but you don't care"

I must admit, finding this song was a pleasant surprise to me. I was looking for "greats" that I might have missed in 2008, and was directed to this band just this past week. I think that right now, there is a lot of depressing stuff going on, around us and within us, and sometimes we let that overtake us and control us. But when that happens, we must always remember that there is a way out, there is a rescue from our troubles.

Rescue is musically catchy and vibrant, but positively conveys its message to the listener. The ever present piano is a joy to listen to. This song was chosen for this week because it is a positive and welcome reminder that God is our rescue, no matter who we are or what we've done. That's what I love about Him. He has compassion for all of us, and loves all of us the same, which unfortunately we cannot say for ourselves. And yet, as imperfect as we are, he'll gladly take us from now to eternity. That's one thing that will amaze me about Him for the rest of my life. He takes care of all of us, and when it feels like you're falling, be assured that He will come to your rescue.

Alive and unworthy we all may be,
But God disregards this,
And in grace sets us free.

Praise: Instrument Of Violence

I'm making some good headway into archiving our resources, hopefully I can get most of it up by the end of the week. These file sizes are huge! Just be glad it's not your bandwidth!

I was going through some of my saved documents this past weekend, and found this devotional excerpt I had saved about praise, to God in general. It astounded me, and still makes me think twice even now...

"Praise is not intended to compliment God. Some people have confessed quite candidly that praise seems like an effort to curry God's favor by soothing or massaging His heavenly ego. But praise is not the blind pursuit of heavenly intervention. It is an instrument of violence. It upsets the climate that furthers life's suffering, confusion, turmoil, and strife. Praise destroys the atmosphere in which sickness, disease, discouragement, and futility flourish. Praise beats out hell's brush fires and breathes heaven's life into death's vacuum."

How does one respond to that? I have always seen praise as a way of thanking God for who He is to us. But this causes me to think about praise as an "Instrument of Violence". When we praise God, when we open our hearts to Him, we are inflicting injury upon Darkness and its advances. It is uprooted and destroyed when praise enters the picture. This is one of my favorite devotions because it completely changed my perspective on it. We're not only praising God, we're waging war.

Setlists Confirmed

Hey all, the setlists have been confirmed, so you can grab it here and see what we're doing for the next couple months (hopefully, of course). I have also made a few new tabs, and will post them up here at request. In the near future, I plan to have all the youth resources (Musicbook 1/2.0, tabs, extra misc. songs, audio) available through this site in batch and single file. Bear with me on that, but we should have a pretty rockin' library by the end of the month. See you for now!

Remember when we used to do this many in one set?

Song Of The Week - January 2

Welcome to another Song Of The Week! This one here marks the first SOTW of 2009, which would've been pretty awesome if we'd been doing this for more than a month haha! Nonetheless, it is still the New Year, so anything that's first for something is pretty sweet.

You Are Here (The Same Power) - Hillsong London, Hail To The King

"My Sheperd and King/I find You within me/For You are here"

Oh no, it's a Hillsong!

Yes, it's a Hillsong, so once we get over that, we can get on to why it's still good :P. You Are Here was also on the album This Is Our God from this summer, but unfortunately they only sang the chorus, and left a bit to be desired. Hillsong London presents the entire version, and if the chorus was good, the rest of the song is exceptional.

I wish that this version of the song was released before we started with the music for this year's youth. I would've loved to play this acoustically, or fully. The solemn feel of the worship is amazing, and it almost feels... contradictory? Like a beautiful disaster, or... I can't put my finger on it. It captures God's suffering for us, and his amazing mercy, grace and power at the exact same time. Then it rises to the chorus, like an anthem proclaiming His greatness. I also like the style that London presents the song in. It has this resonant power to it, but is not aided by heavily overdriven guitars or overtly pounding drums. The tight balance of instruments, arrangement and the message is what gives it its resonance. He is here, and I hope the song reminds you of just some of the many things He is.

You Are Here - http://www.mediafire.com/?gmj4diiriyy

News/Announcements

Hey everyone, I've got a few announcements from Matt/myself here:

- Youth Group starts this Wednesday, Jan. 8
- No Music for this week.
- SNL: February 1st, if I'm not mistaken. Practices are still to be planned, but look over the songs to get back into 'em.
- Setlists are in the process of being made. I will send them out when they are completed.

I think that's it for now. Enjoy the last weekend of freedom ;)

EDIT: Apparently, SNL is now on February 8th. Some of you know, but I thought I'd make the correction.
